Demolition is set to begin within the next few days of the former Ulster County Jail on Golden Hill, officials said Wednesday.

Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan said the $1.5 million demolition of the jail is being done to pave the way for an affordable development on the property.

During an announcement at the site, Ryan described the pending razing of the former jail as a significant step toward the construction of the Golden Hill Drive development.

“Especially, we are taking the first significant step, and it’s quite symbolic given the building we are at,” Ryan said. “We are literally demolishing our old county jail and replacing it with affordable housing for seniors and working people.”

Ryan said that the demolition funding is being drawn from the federal American Rescue Plan. The funding is administered by Ulster County.

But the actual project has not yet received all of the approvals necessary for construction.
