The Schenectady Municipal Housing Authority (SMHA), together with developer partners Pennrose, LLC, and Duvernay + Brooks, LLC are embarking on a revitalization of Yates Village, an aging public housing development located in the Goose Hill/Northside neighborhood of the City of Schenectady. Yates Village is located at 2450 Van Vranken Avenue, north of the city commercial center and occupies an approximately 20-acre site. The multi-family public housing property, originally constructed in 1948, currently has eight U-shaped, 2-story apartment buildings containing 296 apartment units comprising approximately 242,658 square feet. A 2-story community center is attached to the south end of the property with a large community room and kitchen on the ground floor.
The area within the impacted area of Yates Village Phase 1 is currently occupied by two u-shaped structures containing seventy-one (71) residential units and one (1) community service facility. The proposed plan will selectively demolish portions of the existing structures, resulting in the substantial rehabilitation of twenty-five (25) existing units within two (2) buildings, and the new construction of sixty-four (64) apartment units within eight (8) buildings. The project will also include the construction of a stand-alone community center.
