Petersen Commons is a new affordable senior housing community (55+) with a preference for veterans, coming soon to Avenel! This thoughtfully designed 60-unit development continues the successful partnership between Pennrose and Woodbridge Township. Following the opening of Greens at Avenel in 2019, which brought 101 affordable homes to the community through a strong public-private partnership, Petersen Commons will be constructed on the remaining corner of the same Township-owned parcel, further expanding access to high-quality housing in Avenel.
Named in honor of Carl Petersen, a local resident and World War I Medal of Honor recipient, the community reflects a deep commitment to serving seniors and veterans while celebrating the area’s history.
The three-story building will feature 60 modern apartment homes offering a mix of one- and two-bedroom layouts, including a superintendent’s residence. The affordable apartments will be available to households earning 30%, 50%, and 60% of Area Median Income (AMI), providing a range of affordability options for eligible residents.
The development will include a welcoming community room for gatherings and supportive services, common laundry facilities, and on-site management and maintenance space. Residents will have access to parking shared with the adjacent Greens at Avenel community. Three apartments will be accessible for residents with physical disabilities, and two will be outfitted for residents with hearing and visual impairments, while all homes will be fully adaptable. Every apartment will be Energy Star® certified, and the building will meet Zero Energy Ready Home standards, delivering enhanced energy efficiency, sustainability, and long-term cost savings for residents.
