The Challenge
Long after the death of Milton S. Hershey, the founder of The Hershey Company, the town of Hershey Pennsylvania continues to be a special place for its residents. While building his firm, Mr. Hershey simultaneously built for his employees this model town that included comfortable homes, inexpensive public transportation, quality public schools, and extensive recreational and cultural opportunities. Mr. Hershey instilled within the corporate conscience of his firm his profound sense of moral responsibility and benevolence. When in the 1970s demographic studies indicated a significant shift in the socio-economic composition of the town's population, The Hershey Company responded. When selling land for the first time in its history to a private developer for the creation of critically needed quality affordable senior housing, The Hershey Company chose a quality developer, Pennrose.
The Solution
The Pennrose Development Team secured the financing to design and build a brand new 10-story residence of 216 one- bedroom apartments. Affordable for the elderly, the units were rendered to meet the community's high expectations. Each includes a fully-equipped kitchen, modern baths, living room, dining room, and bedroom with ample closets. Many are handicap-accessible. Each apartment is centrally air conditioned, includes a covered porch, and has large windows to allow abundant light. Within the building there are laundry facilities, a multi-purpose community room, and on-site supportive services.
In keeping with the tradition of Milton S. Hershey, the Hershey Plaza offers its residents an impressive array of trips, tours, dinner theater evenings, lectures, and other cultural and recreational activities. The vibrancy of the community attests to the high quality of life this affordable residence affords seniors.
