Goodwill Neighborhood Residences
1999 Architectural Heritage Association of Northeastern Pennsylvania The ChallengeBetween 1982 and 1991 Lackawanna Junior College was located in what had been the Bishop Klonowski Senior High School. Though the original 1920’s historic structure had been expanded with two 1950s additions, it no longer met Lackawanna’s needs. Expansion in its residential neighborhood was not feasible. Recognizing the potential for adaptively reusing the building to create a residence for the elderly, Pennrose purchased the building from the college. This served as both the catalyst for the college’s relocation to facilities that met their needs and the development of affordable senior housing to meet the community’s needs. The SolutionThe building consisted of three, separate, interconnected structures. We developed an innovative design that seamlessly integrated
the original historic structure with one of the adjacent 1950s additions to create 36 one-and two-bedroom apartments. We maintained
the integrity of the historic circulation patterns, even going so far as to leave original doors as decorative historic reminders. Each unit
is singularly unique. The spacious apartments include fully equipped kitchens, large windows, and air conditioning. The facility, which
is managed by Pennrose Management Company, has our signature social services program. < Back to Senior Affordable
